Role of Education
The social function of the educational institution is to provide democratic ideas and facilitate skills for life long learning. Problem solving is a vital skill, along with teamwork, cooperation, and learning to work independently. The educational institution teaches students the importance of following rules and understanding logical consequences if rules are broken. The education system recognizes different learning styles and uses different strategies in order to challenge all students. The purpose of educational institutions is to help every student learn to the best of their ability and grow as individuals. I feel that it is critical that students grow personally while enrolled in formal education, and search for more education, whether that is formal or informal. Like Dewey, I do not see education having a definite end, rather students have the desire to learn and grow throughout their lives. It is my goal to make my students successful in their own eyes. I believe that there are many purposes to formal education, but they all fall under the umbrella of growth.
