It is important to understand the nature of the students in order for the teacher be able to assist and prepare students for a lifetime of learning. As students grow they need to make sense of the world, make their own decisions regarding finances and health, and other important life decisions. As a teacher I hope to engage students in realistic lessons and teach strategies that prepare them to deal with future dilemmas. I plan to use knowledge integration in my classroom, allowing students to use their previous knowledge, add new ideas, and reflect on their learning. It is vital for students to think and test new ideas and perspectives against their previous knowledge, rather than just accept what they are told to be true. I want all my students to continue learning and growing as individuals, and to do so the responsibility of knowledge must be transferred from the teacher to the individual student. I want all students to think critically about what they are being taught, and be apart of their learning.
Each student is unique and has a different learning style. I hope to create an environment in which the students will learn the connection between hard work and achievement, which then creates the motivation to continue their learning and work hard to achieve their goals. I believe that the best way for students to make that connection is through active learning. Active learning involves encouraging students to participate in learning, and providing students with course material and enhancing critical thinking. Students learn best when they are involved and actively participate in their learning. When students take part in the lesson and take time to reflect upon, write about, and then discuss what they are learning, which ultimately deepens their understanding. Not only will students have a deeper understanding of what is being taught, they will also feel more responsible for their learning, feel that their voices are heard, and find value in working with their peers.
